• Title - Row 2 (opt.): Downtown - El Prado
• Location: Santa Barbara, California
• Content: Degen & Degen is the designer on the conversion and addition of the historic El Prado hotel of Santa Barbara. As one of the only examples of the mid-century modern style in the City, El Prado is noted for the characteristic “car related architecture”, distinctive canted balconies, pierced concrete screens and period signage.
  
  For D&D, finding the overlap between the core sensibilities of the modern movement and the brand voice of Courtyard by Marriott was as simple and natural as “form follows function”. Mixed materials that are man-made & natural with artisan driven detailing work to transform this mid-century, motor inn into Marriott’s classically modern brand for the passionate traveler.
  
  With Optimism as our muse, we carefully tended to the principals of the brand while remaining historically faithful to the character of this unique property. Design emphasis was on clean backdrops punctuated by bold, sunny hues; simple shapes & retro-inspired statement pieces; open, airy space planning emphasizing practical simplicity, and future-focused amenities & technology.
